Rev. Harold Akyeampong FKA DJ Jimmy Lee is a US based Ghanaian Pastor, African Studies Specialist, Folklore Master, Ethnomusicologist, Historian with recreational focus on Ghana's Mobile Disco. He is an archivist of early mobile disco activities aka spinning and director of the International Center of African Culture and Arts.
A Mankessim native whose exploits in mobile spinning started with Kumasi based Hi-Tension Sounds under Dr. Beat aka Kwame Twumasi during his 6th Form years in the 80s is a person whose exploits exemplify humility and determination to succeed. He spent his post Sixth Form years apprenticing Uncle B, Marvin aka Sir Robot and Precious Jingles With Alhaji's DYNASTY in the late 80s.
With enthusiasm to learn more, he also became friends with Captain Bosco through his years with AFC later Diamonds Sounds through ZAYAA to V103 to X105 to BOSCO EVENTS. Did you envy Bosco those days with catchy DJ slangs....Jimmy helped a lot. He also did some apprenticeship with Abodwe's group SAMPOKS sounds under Kofi Rasta during the Harry Lord's Show years that toured all over Ghana learning some skills from the masters.
He also had a short stint with Customs Sounds later CBS sounds under Ato CBS now based in Cape Coast. It was during a CBS gig at Teshie Guest Inn that an accidental meeting with Terry Ofosu Bright of the School of Performing Legon let to his getting admission into the African Studies Department-University of Ghana.
After graduating from Legon, Jimmy founded his own group SPACE FM sounds at Mankessim. The sound quality aided by sound engineer. Sir COZY of Tema and the Bosco's boys made Space FM not an ordinary Spinning group. At a time Accra groups were playing LPs, SPACE FM was already playing CDS and played all the big time gigs in schools and events in the region. He was registered member of the spinning groups Association and attended most of the meetings at the Gloryland Hotel those days.
